Trio of Black Iron & Copper Candlesticks — Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall, Sweden, 1960s

Three heights, one composition. This trio of candlesticks by Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall is a masterclass in doing more with less. Each piece follows the same vocabulary — a slender black iron stem rising from a base of three interlocking iron rings, topped with a conical copper candle cup whose faceted surface catches the light with quiet intensity — yet the three different heights give the group a natural rhythm and presence that makes them as beautiful as a still life as they are functional objects.

The design carries all the hallmarks of Ander’s best work for Ystad-Metall: a confident pairing of contrasting materials, a form that is simultaneously geometric and organic, and a simplicity of construction that belies the sophistication of the overall effect. The three-ring base is a particularly elegant solution — stable and grounded, yet visually light and almost playful. The copper cups develop a beautiful warm patina with age that only deepens the contrast with the matte black iron.

The trio is in wonderful vintage condition. The copper shows natural age-consistent patina and the ring bases have a few small spots — all of which adds to the character of the pieces rather than detracting from it. They take standard dining candles with a maximum diameter of 25 mm.
