Table Lamp Model 4485 “Hanö” – Lars Bessfelt for Ateljé Lyktan – Sweden, 1985

Designed by Lars Bessfelt for Ateljé Lyktan in 1985, the “Hanö” is the kind of lamp that draws your eye the moment you walk into the room. The base is a large, glossy black ceramic form — smooth, rounded, and almost stone-like in its presence — from which two slim chrome pillars rise to support a wide, flat fabric shade. The shade hovers above the base like a canopy, casting light downward and outward in equal measure. It is a confident, architectural piece of lighting design.

Ateljé Lyktan was founded in Åhus, Sweden in 1934 by Hans Bergström, and went on to become one of Scandinavia’s most respected lighting manufacturers, known for commissioning bold, design-led work that sat firmly at the intersection of function and sculpture.

Lars Bessfelt is a lighting designer from Skåne who has spent six decades combining aesthetics with function. He began drawing lamps at the age of 14, and his long collaboration with Ateljé Lyktan produced some of the most distinctive Swedish lighting of the 1970s and 80s — including the Grevie and Torup bentwood series, Triggy (1984), Hockey (1986), and the Cleo, Bombus, Hanö, Slits and Birka luminaires. In 1994 he founded Zlamp, his own lighting brand based in Anderslöv, Skåne, where he has designed and manufactured new models ever since.

Condition of this Hanö is very good throughout. The ceramic base is flawless — no chips, cracks or marks of any kind. The shade has softened slightly in colour over time and shows some light staining, consistent with age, but nothing that diminishes the lamp’s considerable presence. G23 bulb.
