Swedish Modernist Tripod “Fishing Rod” Floor Lamp – Sweden, 1950s

Few lamps manage to be both sculptural and functional in equal measure — this one does it effortlessly. Dating from Sweden in the 1950s, this striking “fishing rod” floor lamp is a textbook example of Scandinavian atomic-age, modernist design: a slender black painted metal tripod base anchored by a glossy black sphere supporting a slender stem from which a yellow arm extends like a fishing rod, suspending an adjustable conical shade tipped with brass hardware.

The geometry alone makes it a room presence. At maximum extension the lamp reaches around 180 cm tall with an 88 cm spread — commanding without being heavy, thanks to the almost impossibly slim silhouette. Every element can be repositioned: the arm pivots and rotates at the central joint, the shade tilts at its brass fitting, giving you near-total directional control over the light.

The patina is honest. The yellow arm and legs in particular show age and wear, the shade carries the marks of decades of use — and all of it adds up to something no new lamp can replicate. The electrics have been fully overhauled with a new plug, switch, and cable, so it performs as reliably as it looks. One leg has a very slight amount of play, though the lamp stands firmly without any wobble.

Acquired in Sweden; no maker’s marks, so designer and manufacturer remain unidentified.
