Studio Crystal Table Lamp by Hannelore Dreutler / Studio Åhus for Ateljé Lyktan, Sweden, 1983

A striking example of the Studio Crystal series in one of its most distinctive colourways — this large table lamp was designed by Hannelore Dreutler of Studio Åhus and manufactured by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. The glass body is signed and dated 1983, with the original Studio Åhus sticker still in place, and the brass fitting carries the original Ateljé Lyktan label confirming model number 5492.

The handblown glass base is cylindrical in form, rising from a broad, flat foot through a gently tapering body to a polished brass fitting at the top. The glass has a soft, opalescent periwinkle-blue tone — a colour that shifts beautifully depending on the light, appearing almost lavender in daylight and glowing warmly when lit. Wrapping around the midsection of the body is a continuous clear glass spiral coil: a hallmark decorative detail of the Studio Crystal series, applied by hand during the glassblowing process. The original pull-cord switch with a small tapered ivory toggle hangs from the fitting. The lamp comes complete with its original pale blue fabric shade — the exact shade it left the factory with in 1983 — which complements the blue glass base perfectly.

This lamp is featured in the published book on the history of Ateljé Lyktan, where the Studio Crystal series is attributed to Hannelore Dreutler and dated to 1978. The book also includes a photograph of Dreutler herself in the glashyttan, inspecting a finished lamp alongside her husband and master glassblower Arthur Zirnsack — a rare and wonderful glimpse into the making of these pieces.

The Studio Crystal series was born from the collaboration between Dreutler and Anders Pehrson, then director of Ateljé Lyktan, who had previously worked together at Kosta Glasbruk. They co-founded Studio Glashyttan in Åhus, and from 1978 the series — comprising table lamps, wall lamps, and pendants with handblown glass bases and textile shades — went on to define a new direction in Swedish lighting design, introducing a soft pastel palette at a moment when the industry was ready for it.

Hannelore Dreutler (1942–2009) trained at Konstfack in Stockholm and spent thirty years at Glashyttan. She passed away in March 2009 at the age of 66. Both Studio Åhus (Studio Glashyttan) and Ateljé Lyktan remain based in Åhus to this day.

The glass base is in wonderful original condition with only minor signs of use. The original blue fabric shade is included — some light spotting to the shade consistent with age, but no major fading, staining, or structural issues. Overall a very well-preserved example.
