Set of Three Candle holders by Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall – Sweden, 1950s
A charming Mid-century Modern set of three candle holders in brass and cobalt blue glass, designed by Gunnar Ander for the Swedish manufacturer Ystad-Metall. The set includes a taller three-arm piece flanked by two smaller two-arm pieces, together offering seven candle positions in total. Each brass stem rises from the base and gently bends outward before curving back up, holding a flower-shaped cobalt blue glass bobeche at its tip. The pressed glass catches the light beautifully in that deep, saturated blue so associated with Scandinavian glass design of the period. Between the stems, extra brass wire curls up and out like small leaves, adding a lovely decorative, organic touch to the overall design.
Gunnar Ander was one of the leading designers at Ystad-Metall through the 1950s and 60s, known for combining brass, glass, and wrought iron in warm, sculptural pieces, and this candle holder set is a lovely example of that signature pairing of material and form.
Condition is very good vintage, with wear consistent with age and use on the brass. The glass bobeches themselves are in immaculate condition, with no chips or cracks. Each piece is marked “Made in Sweden.”
This style is designed to hold taper candles with a diameter of 12 mm.
