Pine Pendant Lamp with Rolled Wood Curl Rosettes – Sweden, 1970s

A striking drum-shaped pendant lamp from 1970s Sweden, built from a ring of vertical pine slats with gently rounded tops, evenly spaced around the shade to let both structure and light play a role in the design. Each slat is finished with the pine’s natural warm, honey-toned grain, and every single one features a pair of circular cut-outs filled with delicate rolled wood curls — a repeating rosette motif of tightly coiled shavings arranged into a flower-like pattern. Repeated around the entire circumference of the shade, this handcrafted detail gives the lamp a rich, textural rhythm that sets it apart from more conventional wooden lighting of the era.

Behind the pine slats, a woven mesh liner wraps the inside of the shade, softening and diffusing the light before it escapes through the narrow gaps between the slats and through each of the wood-curl rosettes. Switched on, the lamp glows warmly from every angle: light spills out through the vertical seams, glows through every coiled wood insert all the way around, and even filters upward through a ring of small drilled holes in the flat wooden top, creating a lovely dappled, ambient effect on the ceiling above. It comes fitted with its original white cord and a simple white ceiling cap, keeping the focus entirely on the natural materials and craftsmanship of the shade itself.

This is a fantastic example of 1970s Scandinavian design’s love of natural materials and hands-on texture, equally at home in a rustic cabin setting or as an unexpected, organic accent in a more modern interior.
