Pair of Seven-Candle Candelabras — Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall, Sweden, 1960s

Gunnar Ander designed these candelabras for Ystad-Metall in the 1960s, and it is not difficult to understand why they have endured. The construction is straightforward — black iron arms branching from an oval-shaped baseplate, each one ending in a conical brass candle cup — but the proportions are exactly right, and the result is a pair of objects that look as at home on a modern table as they would have in a Swedish interior sixty years ago.

Each candelabra holds seven tapered candles arranged at varying heights, which gives the group its characteristic silhouette. Lit, they are genuinely impressive. Unlit, they hold their own as a table centrepiece in their own right — the contrast between matte black iron and warm patinated brass doing most of the work without any fuss.

Both are in good vintage condition. The brass cups carry honest patina from age and use. They take standard tapered candles with a maximum diameter of 12 mm. Sold as a pair.
