Pair of Floor Lamps in Black and Gold, The Netherlands — 1990s

There is something almost theatrical about this pair. Two floor lamps in metal, each with a sinuous, sculptural stem — a rounded bulbous form at the base tapering upward into a long, elegant neck, finished with gold-painted fittings and a square gold-painted plinth. The silhouette is somewhere between a chess piece and a Moorish finial, and it works completely.

What makes the pair particularly interesting is that the two lamps are not identical in height — one stands noticeably taller than the other. This asymmetry gives them a dynamic, composed quality when placed together, as if they were made to be a duo rather than a matched set.

The combination of deep gloss black and warm gold is luxurious without being heavy, and the lamps have a presence that works equally well in a contemporary interior as in a more eclectic one.

Both lamps are in good vintage condition with their original wiring and switches intact. Unmarked. Shades not included.
