Pair of Black Painted Metal Cat Candle Holders by Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall, Sweden, 1950s–60s

This charming pair of cat-shaped candle holders captures the characteristic balance of playfulness and elegance found in the work of Swedish designer Gunnar Ander. Created during his time as artistic director at Ystad-Metall, the design reflects the company’s celebrated mid-century Scandinavian style, where functional objects were given a distinctly artistic and expressive character. Produced in Sweden in the late 1950s to early 1960s, these pieces embody the playful spirit that made Ander’s animal figures highly sought after.

Each candle holder is crafted from shaped and welded iron wire, forming a graceful, stylized cat silhouette. The slender legs rest on solid wooden ball feet finished in black paint, complemented by a matching decorative sphere beneath the candle cup. The combination of materials adds warmth and contrast to the clean linear design.

Both candle holders remain in very good vintage condition, with some light, age-appropriate signs of use on the metal and wooden elements.
