Pair of Black and Chrome “Orion” Floor Lamps by Per Sundstedt for Ateljé Lyktan, Sweden, 1960s

This striking pair of model 5485 “Orion” floor lamps, designed by Per Sundstedt for Ateljé Lyktan in the 1960s, is a wonderful example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Slim chromed stems, adjustable cylindrical metal shades, and round black bases come together for a look that’s clean, functional, and still strikingly modern.

Both lamps are labelled, fully rewired and functional, and have been carefully cleaned. They present in very good vintage condition, with some age-appropriate wear, most noticeable on the bases. The original paintwork on both lamps remains untouched — neither has been resprayed.

This pair comes from two different production runs, making it a “near match” rather than a perfect one. One lamp has a shinier black finish, the other more matte. Both retain their original integrated switches in the stem — a detail rarely found intact on Orion lamps today — but with a small variation: one switch has a black edge (the earlier version), the other white (the later version). The base construction underneath also differs slightly between the two, and the labels confirm what the details already suggest: this is a pair made up of an earlier and a later model.

Per Sundstedt was a Swedish lighting designer closely associated with Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, for whom he created several well-known models from the 1960s through the 1980s, including the Orion and Mars models. His work is often cited as a strong example of Scandinavian Space Age design — pairing industrial materials like chromed steel and painted metal with a clean, functional sensibility. Sundstedt also designed lighting for other Swedish manufacturers, including Kosta Lampan (before Kosta became part of Ateljé Lyktan) and Zero Interior, further cementing his reputation within Sweden’s mid-century lighting scene.
