“Minor” Table or Desk Lamp by Stig Ahlström & Clas Kock for Ateljé Lyktan, Sweden, 1982

A superb example of Swedish functional design from the early 1980s — the “Minor” desk lamp, designed by Stig Ahlström and Clas Kock for Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, and bearing the original maker’s label on the underside of the base.

The design is immediately striking. A flat white circular base supports a slender white lacquered stem topped by a polished chrome upper rod, along which the cylindrical spotlight head can be positioned at any height. The head itself is a study in industrial chic — a white domed cap sitting above a black cylinder wrapped with horizontal louvred rings, with a warm copper-coloured interior that gives the directed light a rich, flattering quality. The head pivots and tilts freely, allowing precise directional control.

Ateljé Lyktan was founded in 1934 in Åhus, a small coastal town in southern Sweden, and became one of the country’s most respected lighting manufacturers. The company was known for collaborating with leading Scandinavian designers and producing technically refined, beautifully detailed lamps for both residential and commercial use. Stig Ahlström and Clas Kock were among the designers who defined the company’s bold, functional aesthetic during the 1970s and 1980s.

The lamp is in very good vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with its age. The original label is intact on the base.
