Full Lead Crystal Candle holder by Hanne Dreutler for Studio Åhus, Sweden, 1980

This rare charming pink candle holder is made of full lead crystal with a brass top candle holder. It was designed by Hanne Dreutler and was made in 1980, with the base signed “Studio Åhus Sweden 1980”. The candle holder is suitable for candles with a diameter of 5 cm. The glass is in immaculate condition (no chips or cracks) and the brass top showing some wear and discoloration consistent with its age. Hanne Dreutler (1942–2009) was a German-born designer and silversmith who trained in Basel and at the College of Arts in Stockholm before working at Swedish glassworks such as Målerås, Flygsfors and Kosta Boda in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She and her husband Arthur Zirnsack founded Studio Åhus in Sweden in 1977, continuing Scandinavian studio glass traditions and becoming known for finely crafted art glass. At Studio Åhus, Dreutler applied her skills to a range of functional and decorative pieces throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Among these were glass candle holders, often in opalescent or clear glass with brass elements and signed on the base, like the one on offer, reflecting Scandinavian modern design. She also designed lamp bases and table lamps—hand-blown glass forms made for partners like Ateljé Lyktan and Studio Åhus—typically featuring sculptural glass combined with metal fittings. Her work contributed to the reputation of Studio Åhus as a producer of quality studio glass and occasional functional objects like candle holders and lamps, combining craftsmanship with elegant form. Online, this item is often wrongly described as a vase or lamp base. We include an auction photo showing the same item sold with four small candles. In that photo, the holder is upside down, showing that even experts were unsure of its orientation. The correct position is with the brass part on top, which also places the signature logically on the bottom edge of the base.
