Floor Lamp model “Fabian” by Håkan Fransson for Fagerhult Belysning – Sweden, early 1970s

A fine and characterful example of the iconic “Fabian” floor lamp, designed by Håkan Fransson for the Swedish lighting manufacturer Fagerhult Belysning in 1969. This particular example features two independently adjustable spot heads — one in cobalt blue, one in white — mounted on sliding brackets along a central chrome and black stem, rising from a weighted circular black base. Each head pivots on its bracket arm, allowing the light to be directed precisely as needed. When lit, the interiors of the shades cast a warm glow that contrasts beautifully with the bold exterior colours.

The Fabian series holds a notable place in design history as one of the first lamp series to make extensive use of plastic as a primary material — a genuinely progressive choice in 1969, when plastic was still regarded as a material of the future rather than an everyday commodity. The cylindrical shade form, clean lines, and bold colour options reflect the optimistic, forward-looking aesthetic of late 1960s Scandinavian design, sitting comfortably alongside the broader Space Age design movement that was sweeping European interiors at the time.

Håkan Fransson was a Swedish industrial designer who worked at Fagerhult Belysning during this period. Fagerhult, founded in 1945 in Habo, Sweden, grew to become one of Scandinavia’s most respected lighting manufacturers, known for combining engineering rigour with progressive design thinking. The Fabian series was among the studio’s most celebrated consumer products of the era.

The original label on the underside of the base records the model number 63571 and series number 760282, confirming its authenticity and dating. The lamp is in good vintage condition with light signs of wear and use consistent with its age and takes two E27 bulbs.
