Floor Lamp Model 55 by Svenska Armatur Eskilstuna (SAE) — Sweden, 1950s

An effortlessly elegant floor lamp, Model 55 by Svenska Armatur Eskilstuna, made in Sweden in the 1950s. The design is simple yet refined — a cast iron body finished in a wonderful shade of blue, with chrome details on the gooseneck, stem, and shade fitting that beautifully set off the blue lacquer. Seventy years on, the lamp’s clean lines still feel completely at home in a contemporary interior.

The lamp is height adjustable, the gooseneck lets the shade swivel and tilt freely, and the stem rotates a full 360 degrees around its axis — giving it exceptional flexibility to direct light exactly where you want it.

Eskilstuna has long been one of Sweden’s great centers of metalworking, home to a cluster of small armatur (fixture) manufacturers that supplied the country’s mid-century lighting boom. Svenska Armatur Eskilstuna, marked SAE, was founded in 1946 under owner and director W. Ståhlberg. Like many of its Eskilstuna neighbors — firms such as Möllers Armatur and Eskilstuna Elektrofabrik among them — SAE worked in painted steel, cast iron, and chrome to produce the practical yet design-conscious lamps that characterized Swedish homes in the 1950s. Little has been written about the company’s full history, and surviving examples like this one are the clearest record we have of its output — clean, honest, well-made lighting built to last.

Presented in good vintage condition, with two minor dents to the rim of the shade that don’t draw much attention, and some paint loss on the shade itself. The frame carries a beautiful patina in the original paint. The lamp is stamped “SAE 55” on the chrome shade cap. It has been completely rewired with a period-style cable and is fully functional — a lamp of wonderful quality with lovely, honest patina. E27 bulb.
