Désirée Stentøj — “Selandia” Ceramic Table Lamp, Denmark, 1960s

A quiet but characterful piece from one of Denmark’s most accomplished mid-century ceramics manufacturers. This table lamp base was produced by Désirée Stentøj in the 1960s, decorated in the Selandia pattern — the very first pattern the company ever produced, and one that remained closely associated with the Désirée name throughout its history.

The form is clean and considered: a cylindrical white-glazed stoneware body, tapering gently toward the neck, with a band of hand-decorated detail in warm reddish-brown tones encircling the lower body. It is a modest but telling detail — the kind of handwork that distinguishes Danish studio ceramics of this period from mass-produced alternatives, and that gives each piece a subtle individuality.

Désirée was founded in 1964 by H.C. Torbøl, formerly director and production manager at Bing & Grøndahl, and from its very first collection brought a refined sensibility to everyday ceramic objects. Lamp bases in the Selandia pattern are among the less commonly encountered Désirée pieces, making this a genuinely collectable find for admirers of Scandinavian mid-century ceramics.

The lamp is in very good vintage condition and fully functional. The lamp shade is not included. Takes E27 light bulbs.
