Multicolored Pressed Glass and Brass Pendant Lantern, Scandinavia, circa 1940s–1950s

A truly exceptional piece of decorative craftsmanship, this pendant lantern is one of those rare objects that stops a room in its tracks. Geometric in structure yet warm and jewel-like in character, it occupies that fascinating space between the artisanal traditions of an earlier era and the bold decorative confidence of the mid-twentieth century.

The body of the lantern is composed entirely of individually cut and fitted pressed glass panels, set within hand-soldered brass channels in the manner of traditional leaded or stained glass work. The construction is remarkably complex — each panel is a different shape, carefully fitted to create a three-dimensional star or geodesic form that reads as both architectural and organic. Viewed from below, the lantern reveals a mesmerizing symmetrical pattern of squares, rectangles, octagons and triangles radiating outward from a central point, like a crystal or a snowflake frozen in brass and glass.

The glass itself is the real star of the piece. Three distinct types are used throughout: a clear pressed glass with an intricate scrolling floral and arabesque relief pattern that catches and refracts light beautifully; deep ruby red pressed glass panels with their own bold botanical relief; and smaller accent triangles in rich emerald green. When illuminated, the interplay between these three colours — warm amber-gold from the clear glass, glowing crimson from the red, vivid jade from the green — creates a light effect of extraordinary richness and depth. The relief patterns pressed into each panel cast delicate shadows across surrounding surfaces, animating any room it inhabits.

The brass framework has developed a warm, lived-in patina entirely consistent with its age, adding to the handmade character of the piece. The joints where the brass channels meet at each vertex are cleanly executed, bearing all the hallmarks of skilled hand craftsmanship rather than industrial production. The lantern is suspended from four smaller brass chains that gather into a single larger chain, which in turn connects to an original domed brass ceiling cup — a complete and cohesive hanging system that adds to the overall elegance of the piece.

The overall silhouette — a flattened sphere or cushion form with projecting facets — gives the lantern a sculptural quality that makes it as impressive unlit as when illuminated. It works beautifully in a variety of interior contexts: over a dining table, in an entrance hall, or as a statement piece in a living room or study. The combination of Moorish geometric structure, Art Deco sensibility, and mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship gives it a versatility that few purely period pieces can match.

Condition is excellent throughout, with no cracked or missing glass panels and the brass structure fully intact.
