Black Painted Metal Cat Candle Holder by Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall, Sweden, 1950s–60s
This expressive cat-shaped candle holder perfectly captures the light-hearted character and refined simplicity that define the work of Swedish designer Gunnar Ander. Throughout the mid-century period, Ander became known for transforming functional household objects into small sculptural pieces, often inspired by animals. Cats, in particular, appeared frequently in his designs, combining humour with the clean lines typical of Scandinavian modernism. This medium-sized example was produced by Ystad-Metall in Sweden in the late 1950s to early 1960s, when the company stood at the forefront of Swedish decorative metalwork and modern design.
The figure is created from bent cast-iron wire, skilfully shaped and welded to achieve its graceful, minimalist outline. Black-painted solid wooden balls form the feet, adding both stability and a subtle decorative contrast to the metal structure. The original finish remains well preserved, with only minor paint loss visible on one foot. Overall, the candle holder presents in very good vintage condition, showing only light, age-appropriate signs of use.
