Black & Brass Four-Light Candle Holder – Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall, Sweden, 1950s/1960s
Gunnar Ander designed this four-arm candle holder for Ystad-Metall, a Swedish manufacturer known for quality metalwork during the 1950s and 60s. The design is simple but clever: two black iron wires loop up from the center, topped with a small brass ball. Four straight arms reach out from the base, each ending in a brass candle cup with a turned detail above the drip pan. What makes this piece work is the balance – the sculptural black loops in the middle against the clean brass cups radiating outward. It’s light, graphic, and very typical of Ander’s approach: letting the materials and proportions do the talking rather than adding unnecessary decoration.
Very good condition overall. The black iron shows only minor wear from age, and the brass elements are still in great shape. This style is designed to hold taper candles with a diameter of 12 mm.
