Ateljé Lyktan Floor Lamp with Rare Oversized Custom Shade – Sweden, 1970s

This one is something of a puzzle.

The base is unmistakably an Ateljé Lyktan piece — fully marked, model number 630 GJ. But that’s where a clear identification stops. The oversized black fibreglass and Perspex shade with chrome edge measures a full 80 centimetres across and is finished to a standard that could only be professional work. I reached out to the Ateljé Lyktan factory in Åhus, Sweden, hoping they could dig through their archives for more detail. They confirmed the base was originally made for the floor-standing versions of the Knubbling and Bumling series, both designed by Anders Pehrson in the early 1970s — but the shade itself stumped them. Their best guess is that it was a custom, one-off commission for a client who wanted something more distinctive than a standard Knubbling or Bumling floor lamp. After extensive searching, I haven’t turned up another example anywhere, so it’s likely genuinely unique.

The lamp has real presence — it’s a striking, room-defining piece. Given its scale, it’s best suited to a spot where it has plenty of room to make its statement.

Condition is very good overall. The chrome shows no oxidation, just some light scratching on the base consistent with age. The shade has a few minor scratches and a small scuff mark, none of which detract meaningfully from its impact. The 630 GJ model number indicates a three-step switch, originally designed for 60-100-160W light levels — though with a modern low-wattage LED bulb, that stepped effect is no longer noticeable.

Altogether, this is a spectacular lamp with genuine collector’s value thanks to its rarity. It’s in full working order and takes a standard E27 (LED) bulb.
